Hi to all,
I am thinking about buying a V reg Fiesta 1.25 zetec.
I am slightly dubious though as it has done 117,000+ miles, so I wanted to get the opinion of Fiesta owners so I can decide if its worth taking a chance!
It does have a partial service history and from what I can tell the car does seem like it has been looked after. It has had new 155/70sr13 seals (I have no idea what they are, its all the reciept says!) and valves at 33k, a new rad at 34k, the nsf and osf wheel assembly has been replaced at 40k, new front discs and pads and a new exhaust tail and centre pipe replaced at just over 90k, and a new cambelt kit at 96k. It also got reciepts for the 10, 20, 30 and 40k services, as well as one at 90k and several MOT pass certificates.
Its also worth noting that a huge chunk of that mileage has been done by one person, but it has been sitting in a lock up pretty much doing nothing for a couple of years.
Incidentally its during this period I have no service history for and thefore the most sceptical about - will it be too much of a strain going from doing nothing to being used for 5 days a week despite its good maitenance history?
I have never bought a car with this sort of mileage and as general rule of thumb tend to avoid like the plaugue! (Especially petrol engines) But this one does seem like its worth the investment - should I go for it?
I know generally speaking if a car is looked after it should last, but I need opinions and advice specific to this model. ie any known problems or cases of the same model lasting even longer.
Thank you in advance, and hopefully if I do buy this car ill be a regular on this site!

I'd be a bit wary of the massive gap in the history, there are plenty of MK5 Fiesta's about and if you can afford to spend a bit of time i'm certain you could find a decent low mileage example, or one with a full history for a decent price.
The fact that it has sat unused for a couple of years isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it would need a thorough service before i'd consider driving it.
Do you mind telling us how much it's going for? It may well be that it's a complete bargain and worth the risk, or it's over priced and you should stick well clear!

Im glad you asked about the cost cos its something I completely forgot to mention in the first post! - Its going for £700, but I might try and use the high mileage and gap in the service history to knock it down by about £50.
Also in regards to it needing a service, i spoke to the son of the owner since and apparently its had one of those done recently. Weather its a thorough service though remains to be seen, thats definately something im gonna have to verify.

Maybe worth a punt at that kind of money but he thing that concerns me more is valves at 32k! Also wheel assemblies at such a young age? Fez's don't normally suffer these issues. I'd definitely be getting an hpi check done as it may be accident damaged or be on the insurance register.
If you can push your budget I'd be looking for a really straight one; you could end u p spending another 700quid putting it right anyway.

Tyres.
My cars never have service history, I do it all myself. I'd trust that over some toothless spanner monkey in a back street garage 1999 Nissan Primera

I agree to a certain extent Gaz - presumably you keep all the receipts for the products you buy (oil filters, oil, air filters etc) as that would go a long way to get me comfortable buying a no service history car.
But most people either wouldn't do this or wouldn't be happy taking the risk on you being any better than a toothless spanner monkey in a back-street garage.
